I always reread the Declaration of Independence on this day. I am deeply grateful for our freedoms and it saddens me to see them slipping away. I hope you are wrong about Montpellier but if you are correct, the irony in a state that was as central to our independence as was Vermont is too rich. Another irony is that the current regime is likely more tyrannical than was the British one. May God continue to bless our nation. Happy July 4th!
I do realize that Vermont was not one of the original 13 colonies but certainly those men and women in what would later become the Independent State of Vermont--1777, I think?--were instrumental in our fight for freedom.
Thanks John, it is a bittersweet 4th for us Our country, which was founded on great ideas with much hope has fallen. We cannot go back but we can go forward. It will be a rocky and perilous road. I wonder often if the American people have the strength and will to establish the foundation for freedom in the future. Be brave and fight for truth. May God aid is in our time of great need.
I am always grateful that I grew up loving my country and cherishing our freedom. After traveling the world in the 70s and 80s - mostly by backpacking and going the hostel route -, I realize we are SO fortunate to live here. Sadly now we are under attack from within and too many of the following generations haven't a clue as to what we older folks understand about freedom. They are about to learn the hard way about what we are losing.
I'll still light my sparklers tonight and celebrate our Founding Fathers and their incredible genius in our founding documents!
Watched the Randolph, VT, Forth of July parade this morning with a marine; two tours in Afghanistan.
Stood for our beautiful Stars and Stripes. In the past several years I've seen this flag flying far from home in Zimbabwe and in India. The sight always give me a slight tightness in the throat. Well said, John. Happy forth!!
Song of the day: Adagio for Strings Op 11, Samuel Barber. This is “culture” to me. I do not know what we have now as it is beyond my comprehension. I miss the days of true “culture”, though. It seems a fitting piece as I feel like the very soul of America has been compromised.
I echo your sentiments. Well done.
Independence Day
“For freedom Christ freed us. Stand fast therefore and do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
