No, he had already inherited the money when I got involved. It took us about 6 years, but we eventually persuaded the Connecticut legislature to enact a law so that it wouldn't happen in the future.... I also commuted down many times to hearings at Whiting as Messenger sought release. He is free now.
And have no laws? There are good lawyers, and bad lawyers, like anything else. But individual rights under the Constitution are extremely important, and they need lawyers to uphold and defend them. Both a prosecutor and a defense attorney are necessary to balance interests and strive toward a just outcome in criminal cases.
Laws are essential for any functioning society, but I have begun to question why only attorneys can argue in court. I know one can represent one's self but why not, speaking of farming, a neighbor who speaks like Daniel Webster?

Thanks to modern liberalism that sees oppression and victimization behind every familial and communal constraint, the insane have more rights than everyone else these days. They have the right to refuse treatment. They have the right to roam feral in our streets. They have the right to impersonate the opposite sex and become violent criminals. Only after they commit serious crimes (or after lengthy and expensive legal action by their families) are they (sometimes! No guarantees here!) removed from society and cared for properly. But even if/when they're incarcerated, their rights don't entirely stop there. They get new ones at the expense of others. One of which is the right to torment and re-traumatize their victims bi-annually.
America doesn't have a bigotry or a gun problem. We have an insane person problem, and a distribution of rights problem that we're not willing to address effectively or reasonably because we don't want to look anything like oppressors or victimizers of the vulnerable and marginalized insane.
I have to agree. This is where the pendulum has swung too far. In Vermont, the prosecutors mostly act as defense attorneys (e.g. Sarah George). This is a completely different world from the one in which I was a criminal defense attorney. Prosecutors in the 90s were brutal toward both defendants and their legal counsel. Now they are brutal to the police.....
No one (well, besides me anonymously online, LOL) wants to say that some people should not get every imaginable right. But when we're talking about the insane, giving them total license to do whatever they want is not liberty. It's abuse and neglect; of them and of the community that surrounds and has to deal with them. Having a profound mental illness is a health condition that definitely impacts others. It should be addressed with care, not rights.
One has to wonder, since this type of thing is happening all across our great nation, is it being done because they are that stupid or is it intentional to destabilize society for the “great reset”........
This guy has killed 3 people already, gotten off from prison because he is mentally insane and they are making it possible for him to be released! He should of been euthanized like a rabid animal to begin with because he will never stop killing. The bleeding hearts of this world, who think everyone deserves a second chance, should never be allowed to make these decisions with the laws!
I can't make that judgment, nor need I. It is really not the offenders' fault if the authorities turn a known danger loose. Some of these people have very severe mental health issues, and some are treatable. But the issue is one of balance -- and preventing new victims: including victimizing families by making them endure this extremely distressing process of periodic release applications!
Coming from a former criminal defense attorney, your words are even more meaningful. You are the expert.
I have sat with victims at Whiting, and represented them, many times.

In the end were you successful in barring him from inheriting?

How horrible for the family. There are times I think the best thing that could happen to the legal profession is for it to disappear.

However, I prefer farming. :)

I agree. I believe they have a right to humane care. But not to roam freely.

A bit of both.....

Amen to that. Exterminate the vermin
Need capital punishment for murder and rape.
Thank you for speaking up for the victims as they get injured again, and again, and again....
