This is so true here in the corn belt. The middle sized operation typically run by a single family is being destroyed by the very policies meant to help.
The real war has been on the livestock industry. I have witness in the last 40 years the complete take over of the hog industry by the packers. Use to be everyone had pigs and the pigs were the way to earn a profit by feeding them the corn that you raised. You could make a middle class living on 50 sows and a few hundred acres. Now if you do not feed out 100,000 pigs your consider too small. What a shame. The milk industry is close to complete takeover The only animal industry not yet totally controlled is the beef industry as they haven’t figure out how to confine the mama cow and make it pay vs being out on pasture.
I agree. The pig industry in North Carolina being a prime example. Talk about a recipe for disaster. There is a perfect relationship that exists on a regenerative farm between the soil and the animals - and everyone in the food chain benefits from it. Peace.
Yes it was in North Carolina with Wendell Murphy that the model was established on how to do it. Weak environmental standards allowed him to do what could not be done in other parts of the country.
It comes down to the wrong objectives. When you look to help your brother man, feed him and care for the land/animals, the results are very different than when the goal is maximizing profits. Peace.
Thanks very much John. I have learned a lot through your work. I have read "Dirt To Soil" and "Restoring Your Soil". I have also connected with great regenerative farms like White Oak Pastures in Georgia and Gabe Brown's farm in North Dakota. I am trying to understand what I can do to stop the madness of destroying small farms. Now that I understand the science of regenerative farms and the complete lack of science and logic behind big, industrial farms, the picture is becoming clearer. I will find where I fit in. Thanks again for all you are doing. May God bless you and continue to guide you.
