Based on their self-described activities and issues on their website, I think you are right in pursuing a possible violation of IRS requirements for 501(c)(3) organizations. They do not have their Form 990 available on their website which is okay (at least I could not locate it) but they must provide it to anyone who makes a formal request. It would be interesting to see how they describe their activities in Part III and the lobbying question in Part IV of Form 990EZ (assuming they qualify to file the EZ form). Having been in the not-for-profit for over 30 years, organizations must take their tax exempt mission seriously not only to meet legal requirements but to demonstrate good faith to their donors/members. This is probably the most important duty of a tax exempt organization board.
Yes, the first thing I did when researching this was to seek their 990s -- nada. Though apparently they lost their exemption for a time for non-filing. I also wanted to see where they got their money, how much, and what they spend it on. I would be happy if they just focused on their stated mission -- which I support -- and stop veering into a toxic, vulgar Marxist hatefulness that I find revolting. They can't have it both ways....
“America will likely witness a recurrence of that Great Depression soon, and people will have to come together and feed one another, not label people because of their race, invoke long-dead tribes for exploitation, or milk a government teat to survive. THAT is what rural Vermont once was, not this ideological, taxpayer-subsidized charade that exploits our true heritage for personal wealth and virtue-signaling!”
Thanks David. It encourages me that many people understand the true threats before us. Soft people from soft times are oblivious to the hard truths of the real world.
I have reached out to NOFA and asked them to take a stance on the Geoengineering assault we are under here in Vermont. Of course there was no response because they are allegiant to the climate cult.
I live and farm in Vermont. Can you point me to the information that says they are undermining efforts to legalize on farm slaughter? My husband is a butcher.
I believe they currently work to support on-farm slaughter, as do I. I was relating my personal experience back in 2016. There was a Vermont statute that limited on-farm slaughter to sales of whole animals only, and a statute was pending which Rural Vermont had helped craft which permitted on-farm slaughter but had a "sunset" provision whereby all on-farm slaughter would be banned in three years. I objected and defied the state, and rallied farmers, custom processors, and itinerant slaughterers to challenge and defeat that statute. At that time. Rural Vermont's Andrea Stander told me that they supported the statute and had helped draft it. It was defeated: we can now sell halves and quarters.
John, could you give us some links to the organizations you have in mind? I joined Rural Vermont when I first moved here in 2012, and supported them for several years. I had no idea their on-farm slaughter position was a bait&switch; I took them at face value. Once "migrant justice" and social/sexual issues started to overtake anything to do with actual farming, I bailed. It's too bad, because Vermont really needs an authentic voice for small farmers. I thought they represented such a voice, but was conned.
NOFA/NOFA-VT has gone down the same road. The more they keep pushing woke, the more irrelevant and useless they become. It was painful to look through their offerings for this winter's conference: "What to Expect When You're Expecting Fascism", "Songs for Change", "Tell Your Advocacy Story", "The Art of High-Stakes Communication" (maybe taught by Jen Psaki?).. were some of the courses.
VERMONT GOVERNMENTALLY ILL DEMS HAVE COLD ICE ON THEIR BRAINS

Yes, the last one I found was filed for 2022 and is on the IRS site. Schedule C is the form to report lobbying activities which they did fill out.
Give em hell John!
This is so good:

Apparently they don't look up at the skies very often.... :) It is like plowing our skies. People are fighting back!

Go John! Thank you!
