Tolls have existed for many years in Illinois. One either had the choice to slow down, stop briefly and pay cash or install a transponder (courtesy of the state for $40) which logged one's location with each transaction along with a digital fee.

I always paid cash.

You realize your paying twice the toll by paying cash. Which always seemed unfair that the payment type would allow such a difference.

Yes, I realized it. The anonymity was worth the price.

So, when do we get to tax and track our government officials for every mile they travel in their private jets?

There are close to ~300,000 cars per day crossing Bay Bridge in CA San Francisco-Oakland. The current rate is apparently 8$ per single driver, it used to be 2-3-4$ in the years I drove across every single day... SO it makes right now ~720 mlns per year from those fees (assuming only a quarter million of cars only) which do not cover any human intervention in regard to these collections. People used to have jobs on every passing lane, receive cash or change, but now no more, all AI's, camera's, pictures of driving license and letters or automated payments for those with 'fast track'. The current 'requirement' for CA REALid (in order to fly domestically) coupled to driver's license results in every bridge crossing the 'delivery' of the SS number of the driver. According to SFC the yearly maintenance costs of the Bay bridge are ~190mln.... So WHO is getting the almost ~500mln from the toll fees left?? The Golden Gate bridge is even better, the toll is almost TEN $ per pass..

WELCOME TO CA .... Btw. how many building permits were issued in Palisades where 'fires' leveled almost 10,000 structures?? FOUR building permits, so far.... Source:

Washington State, ruled by far, far leftists, introduced a tax per mile bill and this isn't the first time they tried that. They are calling it a per mile road usage fee. Initially, it will be voluntary. How many idiots will agree to put a tracking device in their vehicle to give the government more money to waste? Too many I would say. And of course, it's common knowledge that when something starts out to be voluntary, eventually it becomes mandatory.

After 70 years there, I fled Washington State 3 years ago. This was one of MANY reasons. They have been incrementally implementing the pay per mile scheme for over 15 years. They plan on a progressive tax per mile based on time of day, type of vehicle, type of road, etc. Drivers will pay a variable rate from the minute they leave their driveways. I had a transponder on each of my vehicles and maintained an auto-refilled debit account with the State that deducted from the balance each time I traversed a pay road. This in addition to paying the near highest gasoline tax in the country. They are working out the legal details in order to require some type of GPS tracking device for drivers.

As a resident of this broken state that gives me one more reason to consider fleeing the sinking ship. I am fortunate enough to live close to Iowa where the price of gas is usually 30 to 50 cents cheaper per gallon so we fill up every time we are there.
