To be fair, a lot of people have been talked into this being trendy, just like they have been talked into thinking having personal property more than bare minimum is somehow hoarding.

But this isn't about a voluntary trend or fad, but an economic squeeze. People just can't afford the traditional American home....

I travel full time house and creature sitting and I can tell you that the housing situation is dire in this country. There are MANY people who live on the road because they cannot afford housing. I can't afford housing, or a rental, even if I was lucky enough to find something available. A number of people on the road are older and only receive social security. They do not have a big pension. So, yes--this is a huge problem not only for older people, but for people of all ages.
