A battle for our health currently centers on the use of pesticides and other chemicals in American farming. As I recently explained in the Baltimore Sun, chemical companies that have been losing lawsuits to US juries for causing cancer from glyphosate have been pushing for state lawmakers to protect them from legal liability with laws that shield them from suit so long as they comply with federal labeling requirements on their products. Georgia and North Dakota have already done so.
More than 177,000 Americans have filed lawsuits claiming glyphosate caused their non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and several juries have awarded billion-dollar punitive damage verdicts against Bayer Corporation (formerly Monsanto) for knowingly selling its toxins with insufficient warnings of risks. These companies now seek to shield chemical manufacturers from liability by allowing them to hide behind labels that do not properly warn consumers. They have recruited a number of industry-controlled federal officials to support them.
79 lawmakers have signed a letter objecting to the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) agenda of more strongly regulating glyphosate and other potentially toxic agricultural chemicals. They accuse people like me of being part of “activist groups promoting misguided and sometimes malicious policies masquerading as health solutions” or as an “environmental activist… advancing harmful health, economic or food security policies under the guise of human health.”
This Orwellian effort engages in the usual fear-mongering, claiming that cutting chemical exposures will actually hurt human health! The letter is itself malicious and supports chemical manufacturers and their profits above Americans’ health.
I have repeatedly written that without improvements to our food supply at HHS, EPA, and USDA, the promises of MAHA will not be delivered, and that conservatives do not deserve to win future votes if they fail to deliver on these promises. These issues should be bipartisan! I am not gluing my hands to pavement or smashing works of art as an “environmental activist,” I am endorsing decades of research and joining thousands of litigants who have proven repeatedly that these chemicals – banned in many nations around the world – are a monumental threat, especially to our children, and especially to women.
A letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has been drafted in response to this shameless defense of toxins. The authors have distributed this letter for signature by health influencers, farmers, doctors, scientists, leaders of organizations, and other leaders in the MAHA community to sign it. (They are not looking for mass signatures from the public at this point). If you or anyone you know fits within these categories and wishes to sign, please do so here. Farmers can include the name of their farm under "Organization."
We must fight back against this heinous attack on our health by the usual corporate suspects and their unscrupulous or uneducated congressional lackeys! Please share this Substack and/or this letter with qualified professionals or farmers who will sign on to common sense and safer food. Let us Make America Healthy Again, by rebuffing those who seek to continue toxifying our soils, livestock, food, pollinators, and children with pesticide residues. They elevate corporate profits above basic morality.
