Beekeeper here. Male bees, properly called drones, have a pretty cushy life for a while - at least until they either a) mate with a queen and die or b) are expelled from the hive in the fall as unnecessary eaters and die. I haven't asked any drones, but I'm thinking that the quick death after mating is preferable to death by starvation and cold.
