Chickens are not nice to each other in close quarters. My uncle had a typical egg laying barn when I was young. The cages were small but the beaks were clipped and the hens had fresh air, running water and constant feed. While not perfect, they were safe from predators and each other and they laid eggs.
Cage free is such a horrible lie. I've had chickens most of my life. I could only allow them to free range in certain situations. The downside of free ranging for a chicken is death or dismembering. And, of course, "cage free" is nothing like free range. The only upside is to the producer, not the hens themselves.
Same silly issues with meat rabbits. Sure I'd love mine to each have a big pen of their own. But in their cages, they are safe and well nourished and comfortable. They do what they are bred to do.
The Supreme Court failed to overturn the California law on how pigs can be raised in other states a clear violation of the commerce clause how was that possible? What if Iowa had passed a law specifying how movies were to be made to be shown in Iowa where the number of gays would be limited. It’s a horrible example but you get the drift.
WA state also only allows "cage-free" eggs. I was originally all for this and voted for it. It's been in effect for several years now. I didn't realize "cage-free" could mean just a few minutes outside a cage a day...

Farmers markets are a good place to start looking for local, sustainably raised food.
Michigan also instituted a law the first of January for all eggs sold are to be from “cage free” producers. 🙁
