With that out of the way, I have noticed the home schooled kids aren't driven away from their roots nearly as much as the government run versions, probably due to not being coerced, cajoled and encouraged by teachers and so called guidance counselors to "leave here because there's nothing here for you".
I've often thought that these teachers are scared that the kids will come back and take their jobs, at least it sometimes seems that way.
I graduated in 1972. At that time I could see the cliquish nature of the school employees to the point that they kind of looked down on anybody that didn't go on to college, especially me with a fairly high IQ. I did go on to college, graduating summa cum laude from the University of Hard Knocks as an independent extended distance transportation forwarding expert (long haul truck driver).
Agreed! I was raised blue collar as well, and have learned to be suspicious of school (government) employees. Thanks for sharing your experience!! (I almost became a trucker, and was also weighing culinary school, when my dad offered to help me finish college after I had dropped out.)
As a resident of the failed state of Illinois I have a front row seat. I have grandchildren that their mother has decided since Covid to homeschool them. She is not very capable and hate school herself. I now have a 6 yr old granddaughter that cannot read cannot speak in a way you can understand her. Even her parents have difficulty in interpreting what she is trying to say. So home schooling isn’t the answer for everyone yet the Illinois school systems have horrible outcomes. How did we come to this???
Society has broken down largely because families, communities, and values have broken down. Wendell Berry has written a great deal about it -- it is in large part because we have abandoned an agrarian foundation for an industrial unmooring.
And then we abandoned industry so we are doubly effed and children are left to be influenced largely by social media, just about the worst of all possible outcomes.
I am so sorry to hear about your granddaughter's plight. If it's any consolation, even parents who are highly educated and "academic" often miss warning signs about what is going on in classrooms. For better or worse, this is a moment in history when we must circle our wagons and tend to our own... in every sense. We especially can no longer outsource the education and moral upbringing of our children. I would argue that this is what makes the so-called "stay-at-home" mom one of the most critical and precious vocations that exist. The home front and its rich multi-dimensional atmosphere must be rediscovered, cultivated, championed, and protected. I do also understand there is an economic component, which makes homeschooling difficult, and even impossible (for single moms)... which is where we grandfolk come into play. If we can help, we must. So it was in times past. However much one sacrifices financially to educate a child at home, believe me, the cost of a mentally unbalanced and virtually unemployable young adult down the line is more expensive (in every regard!) by far!!
You are making a premature judgement. For one thing, not all children are ready to read at that age. It is one reason why "dyslexia" is so prevalent. My own daughter was not ready to read until age 8 no matter what I tried. Once she was ready, she progressed to 4th grade level in 6 months.
Speech is another area where children differ quite dramatically and I am not sure why you think the child would be speaking better if she were in school other than yes, she may already be getting intervention. It is not too late for that. I had a serious speech impediment that was not addressed until 6th grade.
Obviously I know nothing more about the situation that what you wrote. I am only suspecting that it may help if you work on your attitude towards the mother such that she may accept suggestions. Most states allow for children to receive speech therapies even while homeschooled. I am not personally familiar with Illinois but I did homeschool in 8 different states and had two children who needed speech therapy.
If you are able to make suggestions, or if you have access, one activity that helps nearly all aspects of learning and is noninvasive is reading aloud to the child whether personally or by recordings. At that age, two suggestions I have are The Boxcar Children and Hank the Cowdog. Perhaps gifts of recordings would be acceptable. Children can listen at least several levels above their reading and you can do something positive for her.
Ok I’m convinced now because of your anecdote all homeschoolers will be harmed by their illiterate parents that will do them harm better let noble teachers unions decide how to teach our kids there been doing such a swell job at it so far
you have a comprehension problem don't you. I did not claim that all home schoolers were illiterate, I was pointing out the reality that this is not an easy/simple answer. The Public school systems in parts of Illinois are a mess because of the Democratic party/teacher unions but also some parents who claim to home school their children are not capable of doing so.
Homeschooling laws are nearly always a step backwards and written by those who want to suppress parental rights while being couched in language that purports only to be concerned about the children. They are concerned all right - concerned that they do not have complete control.
“To be GOVERNED is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right nor the wisdom nor the virtue to do so. To be GOVERNED is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, counted, taxed, stamped, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, authorized, admonished, prevented, forbidden, reformed, corrected, punished. It is, under pretext of public utility, and in the name of the general interest, to be placed under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted from, squeezed, hoaxed, robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, the first word of complaint, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, hunted down, abused, clubbed, disarmed, bound, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, dishonored. That is government; that is its justice; that is its morality.”
