Wow! I didn’t hear about this story, thanks for your reporting John.

I have never really formulated the mechanisms for how ESG would bring about increased profits for the owners of coal companies, but it is brilliant. (It also has the net effect of less energy consumption). It is Coal OPEC, a cartel designed to manipulate prices through supply coordination.

Here in the West we face frequent power shut offs due to wind. After the Paradise Fire in the Sierra foothills PGE (local utility) was sued for billions of dollars in damages and this means that whenever the wind speed is above 30mph many rural ratepayers don’t get power. This happens in SCE (Southern California Edison), PGE (Pacific Gas and Electric) and NV Energy (Northern Nevada) rate paying districts, and I am sure in others. This means that rural western consumers no longer have reliable power, and must purchase fuel and generators, solar and battery backup or go without power for extended periods of time. All of this is to prevent potential legal liability for above ground transmission lines. It is cost prohibitive to move all of the above ground lines underground in rural areas (particularly areas with shallow granite bedrock).

I cannot help but see a common thread playing out across the western world: more expensive and less reliable electricity (all the while we are attempting to convert to all electric transportation and heating). Germany has seen rates quadruple since 2020. Many American rate payers have seen a doubling and tripling of kwh prices in the same time frame. I no longer have reliable power at my farm (on a well) and cannot reliably power my 20 freezers (holding freshly harvested poultry) or pump water. I am moving off my brother’s land in Northern Nevada to pursue other agricultural opportunities and save enough money to invest in my own power generation for my next farm venture.

Cheap, reliable power is essential to modern society. I would love to be allowed to slaughter, butcher and package fresh poultry for immediate consumption, without the need for refrigeration, but the county wouldn’t let me do that. And now they’re turning off my power (as they did when there was a wildfire in my neighborhood and on my property, so no one had water to fight the fire) whenever it gets windy. It seems there is coordination in making energy more scarce and expensive.

Again, there is only one useful heuristic: responsibility deferred is tyranny guaranteed. Shame on me for not producing my own power. we all must take our own needs in our own hands.
