The public education standards are abysmally low. When my children were in “school”, I held a reading group at my kitchen table where I taught neighbor high school students how to read. We began with second grade material for high school students. I brought this up to the principals and superintendent and barely received a shoulder shrug. The district my children were in was rated highly and I must wonder how that occurred. How can young adults be expected to sign contracts for leases or whatever if they are not literate? I definitely went on proverbial strike post-shoulder shrug and that was in the early 2000’s. I do not want to spend more tax money on something that clearly does not have high standards or is ineffective. This subject, like quality food/nutrition, is near and dear to my heart. Thank you for sharing it.
