It’s good to have you here!
It is exciting to launch this substack newsletter. I’m deeply grateful to the many people who have encouraged me to continue writing—this newsletter and the book I am publishing with Chelsea Green Publishing are a product of that confidence and encouragement.
Welcome to a newsletter, a book, or both.
As an attorney and Vermont farmer, my unusual blend of disciplines often yields unusual analysis, but a recurrent theme in my writing has been small-scale homesteading and farming. My book delves deeply into the numerous benefits provided by diverse local farms to human health, animal welfare, water, soil, rural economies and culture, and even national security—it is not a good time for Americans to become even more dependent on China, especially for food.
Food Prices Will Continue to Climb
Food prices will continue to climb because fertilizers and fuels have inflated at much higher rates than most goods, and these costs will compound in food production, processing and distribution. Understanding agriculture and how to restore local farms is a complex issue, but a very important one.
I enjoy writing so that I can share learning and critical discussions with others, and this is especially true when I write about food and farming. I hope to invite people who know little about the details and culture of agriculture to jump in and learn, and enjoy greater knowledge of farming! Maybe next they will jump in and buy sheep, chickens or maybe a family cow.
My book is titled “Small Farm Republic, Why Conservatives Must Embrace Local Agriculture, Reject Climate Alarmism, and Lead an Environmental Revival”
I am humbled and honored that Joel Salatin offered to write the Foreword for this book. Book pre-orders will greatly improve the audience reached at official release, as pre-orders fuel the algorithms for book stores and wholesalers. Small Farm Republic can be pre-ordered at Amazon.com:
You are now subscribed to my substack newsletter of the same name: Small Farm Republic. Today’s newsletter is a warm welcome, and an invitation to read upcoming articles. Future pieces will range in subject areas, but at least one newsletter each week will delve into an area of agriculture, whether economic, cultural, political or practical.
You will receive my free emails right here in your inbox. You can also log in to the website to read the full archives and other posts as they are published.
What to Expect from this Newsletter
I expect to post at least two exclusive articles here each week. I will also be creating accompanying podcasts, and occasional videos. I expect to interview local Vermont farmers for the podcast—I’m excited to share them and their knowledge with you!
I am honored to share my writing, and happy that substack permits me to offer these newsletters to you for free.
For those who wish to support my efforts with a paid subscription, I am very thankful, and will be creating additional content, including articles, photos, and videos available only to paid subscribers.

Spread the Word!
I’m eager to engage with more and more readers and writers, so please respond to this email and tell me what you’d like me to write about and how I can serve you. Comment on articles in the comment section and share your experiences or disagreement. Or, tell me your own farming or food story, send a picture of your animals or pets, ask me a question, or just say “Hello.”

Very Gratefully,
Farmer John Klar
Can't wait to read the book! It's just what our Nation needs. Thank you for fearlessly fighting for our endangered rural people!
Thanks, John. Small VT organic dairy here -- just signed up with daughter. I've followed your articles since your run for gov, and look forward to your interviews with others and more.
Hard to say how much of a minority we really are given the lack of transparency in our electoral system, but maybe your channel can help those of us in this community to connect and network, not just for food security.
I'm especially outraged about the climate scams and the environmental disaster that awaits us from the many mega-solar fields and windmill monstrosities...many on prime ag soils. Thanks to Rob Roper's reports in the Vt Daily Chronicle, our "betters" in Montpelier are showing their hostility to any questioning their agenda and outing their conflicts of interest. I have yet to see any mention in all these committee hearings and legislation about manufacturers, installers and owners being responsible for picking up, recycling and disposing of the environmentally toxic heavy metals and other materials in this chinese junk that has an admitted functional life expectancy of less than 30 years. Brownfields await our children and grandchildren.
